The Keyboarding Spelling Bee

I was recently on a long flight where the featured movie was “Akeelah and the Bee”, a 2006 film about a middle school spelling bee.

I have to admit I was skeptical at first. How much intrigue could a film about a spelling bee possibly have?

Boy, was I wrong!

Not only did the film have great acting, but it also had me on the edge of my seat for the rest of the flight.

It reminded me of the activity, The Keyboarding Spelling Bee.

This fun activity not only gives your students an authentic purpose to practice their typing, it will also push them to think about spelling rules.

In order to win, both their typing and their spelling need to be top notch.

So get ready! You’ll be surprised just how fun spelling can be.

I teach K – 3 students. I use the Keyboard Game from the website bigbrownbear.co.uk for a typing practice contest. It has a 30 second clock and the students have to type as many letters as they can in that time (the program instructs what letter is to be typed) At the end of the 30 seconds the person with the most letters typed gets a treat of some kind and their name on the “Terrific Typists” bulletin board. My students love it.
